FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Hypnotic or suggestive therapy is the oldest of all healing techniques. From the Sleep Temples of Egypt through the histories of ancient Greece and Rome some form of hypnosis has always been an intimate part of all cultures. Underpinning all of this, we now have scientific evidence of how the mind and body share the same molecules.. what you think and feel rides on the back of real world molecules in your body. You might think of hypnosis as the space between thoughts.. like putting the car in neutral, between changing gear. The hypnotherapy part is like breaking old driving patterns and selecting new gears.

The actual experience of being hypnotised is very difficult to describe, neither asleep nor awake. We each experience hypnosis in our own unique way. What most people will not know, is that hypnosis occurs naturally and, in fact, you spend most of your day in a hypnotic trance! The phenomenon is hiding in plain sight.

Help with breaking unwanted habits,  (e.g. smoking, alcohol abuse, drug abuse, nocturnal enuresis, nail biting, stuttering); relief and often remission from symptoms like breathing problems, stomach and ‘nerves’; skin problems and nervous rashes; arthritic pain, period pains and general neuromuscular aches and pains.

NLP, or Neuro Linguistic Programming, captures successful approaches to understanding, modelling and creating new behaviour, rapidly. It’s original creators defined it as ‘an attitude and a methodology that leaves behind a trail of techniques’.

Time Line Therapy® is a process that helps us to let go of negative emotions from the past, let go of doubts and fears,  and create our future.

We meet for an hour , in which I listen and assess the problem and ask what you want me to do. I assess the case and propose a way forward. I will then offer you a treatment programme, in which sessions are generally for two hours weekly. Exceptions sometimes apply, for example with children, and in cases where the treatment looks very straightforward.

Usually between 5 and 7 sessions; Smoking cessation therapy is geared for a single two-hour session.

Your doctor cannot guarantee outcomes and neither can I. Indeed guarantees are frowned on by the professional bodies. The thing is, you are involved in the process.

However, by far the most people get the results they wanted, if not more.

Well, what are you comparing with? Some people pay more to look after their nails, skin and hair; or to service the car! – and don’t even ask how much my solicitor charges. This is your mental health at stake. More seriously, I will get to the heart of the matter and more quickly, and the aim here is to help you achieve a long-term resolution to your current problem. Being an ex-scientist helps me analyse more easily and and gain deep insight more quickly, which saves you time, money, grief and disappointment. I have some 20 years experience working in this field full-time, and also train people in hypnotherapy and NLP. In 2010 I gained my PhD in understanding what makes people happy! But the bottom line here is to ask yourself how much is a solution worth to you, and what is the cost of leaving it unresolved?

Yes, I have appropriate and full professional indemnity and public liability insurance

Yes absolutely. (Do note, however, that the law makes certain demands – these concern issues arising where the law has or may be broken by a patient. I undertake to warn you of this requirement, before you reveal any such facts.)

Yes, safer than normal life! I am deeply ethical in my approach.

Absolutely, yes. In confidence

Sometimes antidepressants can slow our progress; other times not; call me to discuss.

No, not usually. If you are currently under the care of another medical professional, or where we are dealing with clinical matters, then it may be appropriate and in your interests that we seek a referral.

Yes. You might want to consider that for children less than age of about 16 years, then most problems are a call for some form of attention – or to be ‘listened to’. This even includes quite ‘serious’ problems. It follows that you as parents have a role to play in the problem and in the outcome. Sometimes a chat with Mum or Dad can produce a far simpler solution. In all cases, ask, does the child see this as a problem from his/her point of view? The lower age limit also depends on the child’s capability to understand and follow instructions. Formal hypnosis is hardly ever needed with young children. I have current DBS clearance.
