Stress is the big issue of our times. An old-time hospital ward sister once told a colleague of mine ‘good food is essential for your health, but stress can kill you.’ I think she had it about right. Coping strategies can help, of course; and there’s a lot of advice out these days. Things like taking a break, getting outside, going for a walk, mindfulness, moderating your caffeine intake, keeping hydrated, getting enough sleep and so on, can all help.

But if your stress persists, and you ignore it .. it can become a sort of ‘new normal’. Which means it can build up without you fully recognising what’s happening to you. And that’s when the real trouble can start, even almost as if ‘out of the blue’. So don’t leave it; get some expert help. Possibly see your doctor, who may recommend counselling or CBT, or prescribe calming medication. Mindfulness and mediation have also been shown to help. But what can hypnosis/hypnotherapy offer?

Reducing Stress Levels and Stress Symptoms

Hypnotherapy and NLP can work in two ways to help in dealing with stress and reducing personal stress levels. One is by directly reducing your personal responses or reactions. For example, I might use hypnosis to bring down your heart rate or blood pressure, or relax tension in your stomach, or in your neck or face muscles.

Or another great technique is to teach you to control negative thoughts, especially catastophrising what ifs like: ‘What if it all goes wrong’; ‘What if I can’t remember’; ‘What if they don’t like me’; What if I make a mistake’ etc. This builds your resilience, and is a straightforward yet effective hypnotherapy stress management technique.

Another, and very powerful method is to help you change the way you go about things and the way you react to them. For example, if at work you feel you can’t say no to requests, then you may take on more work than you can handle, leading to stress. Hypnotherapy techniques, especially Time Line Therapy(R) from NLP, can help build your assertiveness and inner confidence. Or maybe you feel you must not make mistakes, then we might work to resolve your unrealistic perfectionism. Or at home, if you feel you must be there all the time for your children, then you might exhaust yourself. In that case, we might for example work to help you gain more trust in yourself and your children to allow them space to learn from their own mistakes.

These examples show how Richard uses hypnotherapy to help bring down your stress levels by reducing your personal sensitivity to stress-provoking situations. This method builds up a more far-reaching and long-lasting resilience to stress.
